Template
Google Shopping product title template
A product title template is a fixed order of attributes, filled per product by a rule. This page gives you Google's rules in one table, a template for eight categories, the feed-rule expression that produces each one, and before/after examples so you can see what changes when a 20-character store title becomes a 70-character Shopping title.
We connect your store, build the feed and keep it in sync. Updated 2026-10-27.
At a glance
- Google reads up to 150 characters of title but shoppers usually see about 70, so the brand, product type and the one attribute they search by go first.
- Base template: Brand + Product type + Defining attribute + Variant (color, size, capacity). Reorder per category; never add price, shipping, promotions or your company name.
- Titles produced with generative AI must be submitted in structured_title with digital_source_type set to trained_algorithmic_media.
- In Textfinity the template is a combine transform or one advanced DSL line; AI configs write 100 to 150 character titles per product with the key facts in the first 70; accepted titles go to structured_title while the template stays in title.
- On the feeds Textfinity has profiled, the average title uses around 20 of the 150 characters, so most catalogs gain by adding attributes, not cutting.
Google's rules for a Shopping product title
Google's title attribute guidance is short and strict. The table collects the rules that decide whether a title is approved and whether it matches queries, so you can check any template against them before writing a rule.
| Rule | Detail | What it means for the template |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 to 150 characters; longer titles are truncated with a warning | Design for 70, allow up to 150 |
| Order | Most important details first; users often see only the first 70 or so characters | Brand and product type before adjectives |
| Variants | Include the detail that distinguishes each variant (size, color) and submit it in its own attribute too | Color and size at the end, also mapped to color/size |
| Language | Professional, grammatically correct; no all caps, symbols, HTML or extra spaces | Clean the source fields in the store or a merged source; a column takes one rule |
| No promotion | No price, sale text, dates, shipping, delivery info or company name | Strip 'Sale', 'Free shipping' and store names |
| Keywords | Include the product name, brand and specific details such as waterproof | Pull material, capacity, use case from attributes |
| AI titles | Generated titles go in structured_title with digital_source_type trained_algorithmic_media | AI config output maps to structured_title |

Product title templates by category
One order does not fit every vertical. Fashion shoppers search by brand and item, electronics shoppers by model and spec, furniture shoppers by item and size. Each row is a template you can copy; the example shows it filled from typical store attributes.
| Category | Template | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion | Brand + Gender + Product type + Material or pattern + Color + Size | Marlowe Women's Wrap Dress, Linen, Black, M |
| Shoes | Brand + Model + Gender + Product type + Color + Size | Nike Pegasus 41 Men's Road Running Shoes, Blue, US 9.5 |
| Electronics | Brand + Model + Product type + Key spec + Variant | Google Pixel 9 Smartphone, 128 GB, Obsidian |
| Furniture | Brand + Product type + Material + Style + Dimensions + Color | Nordhem 3-Seater Sofa, Linen, 220 cm, Beige |
| Beauty | Brand + Product line + Product type + Key benefit + Size | Juno Skin Vitamin C Serum, Brightening, 30 ml |
| Food and consumables | Brand + Product type + Flavor or variant + Pack size + Weight | Bergamo Whole Bean Coffee, Dark Roast, 3-Pack, 1 kg |
| Sports and outdoors | Brand + Product type + Sport or use + Key feature + Size | Fjord Trekking Backpack, Hiking, Waterproof, 45 L |
| Jewelry | Brand + Metal + Stone + Product type + Style + Size | Luna 925 Silver Moonstone Ring, Stacking, Size 54 |
Turning the title template into a feed rule
A template becomes a rule in one of two ways. The combine transform takes a list of attributes and a delimiter, which covers categories where every attribute is filled; it does not skip empty ones, so a missing attribute leaves a doubled delimiter. The advanced DSL covers the cases where the order or the parts change with the data: a model number that exists for some products, a capacity that applies only to electronics, a pack size that should appear only when it is more than one. Both produce one title per product from the catalog at every rebuild, so new products pick up the template automatically.
Advanced transform on title (electronics)
if [model] is not empty then
[brand] + " " + [model] + " " + [product_type] + ", " + [capacity] + ", " + [color]
else
[brand] + " " + [product_type] + ", " + [capacity] + ", " + [color]AI-written titles and structured_title
Templates are predictable but flat: every product in a category reads the same. An AI config in Textfinity writes a title per product from the attributes you choose (name, description, material, use), optionally translated into the feed's language. Length is fixed by Textfinity: 100 to 150 characters with the key information in the first 70. The generations are reviewed and accepted one by one or all at once; the replace from AI config transform uses only accepted titles and otherwise falls back to a source field you choose, not to the template. Google asks that generated titles be submitted in structured_title with the digital_source_type sub-attribute set to trained_algorithmic_media; map the AI column there and keep the template title in title for products without an accepted AI title, or omit title so Google uses the structured version.
For a 1,000-SKU catalog the first run completes in batches of up to 50 products. Editing the config creates a revision and the products are regenerated, so changing the source attributes later does not mean starting over.
Product title template for ecommerce channels beyond Google
The same attributes feed every channel, but the display budget differs, so one catalog usually carries two or three title rules. Google allows 150 and shows about 70. Meta allows 200 and recommends 65 for the ad card. TikTok Shop listings must be 25 to 200 characters with each word capitalized and numerals rather than words. Pinterest accepts up to 500 and shows the first line in the Pin. Amazon's flat files cap item titles at 200 characters, with category style guides that are stricter.
The practical pattern is a long template for Google and Pinterest, a short one for Meta that drops the brand when it duplicates the Page name, and a TikTok Shop variant with its own rule. Capitalize only uppercases the first letter and lowercases the rest, so word-by-word capitals have to come from the source. Three feeds, one mapping of the underlying attributes.
Examples
Worked examples, by situation
Five catalogs, five title rules. The before is the store's own title; the after is what the rule publishes.
Combine with variant options
Before
Wrap Dress
After
Marlowe Women's Wrap Dress, Linen, Black, M
How we set it up
advanced on title for the women's range: if [product_metafield_custom_material] is empty then [product_vendor] + " Women's " + [product_title] + ", " + [variant_color] + ", " + [variant_size] else the same with [product_metafield_custom_material] + ", " before the color. The if is what keeps dresses without a material metafield clean; combine would leave a doubled comma.
Conditional model number and capacity
Before
PIXEL9-128-OBS
After
Google Pixel 9 Smartphone, 128 GB, Obsidian
How we set it up
The advanced DSL shown above: if [model] is not empty then brand + model + product type + capacity + color, else the same without the model. Normalize capacity spellings (128GB, 128 gb) in the source or a merged source first, because a rule on another column cannot feed the title rule.
Dimensions and material from attributes
Before
Sofa Linnea
After
Nordhem Dreisitzer-Sofa Linnea, Leinen, 220 cm, Beige
How we set it up
advanced: [brand] + " " + [product_type] + " " + [name] + ", " + [material] + ", " + [width] + " cm, " + [color]. Trailing codes such as " - 220B" in the name have to go in the source, since the title takes one rule. The German feed uses a merged source for translated product_type values keyed on SKU.
Pack size only when it is more than one
Before
Dark Roast Beans
After
Bergamo Whole Bean Coffee, Dark Roast, 3-Pack, 1 kg
How we set it up
Advanced DSL: if calc{[pack_qty]} > 1 then [brand] + " " + [product_type] + ", " + [flavor] + ", " + [pack_qty] + "-Pack, " + [weight] else [brand] + " " + [product_type] + ", " + [flavor] + ", " + [weight]. An if cannot sit inside a concatenation, so each branch spells out the whole title. Products sold singly get no pack segment at all.
AI config with template fallback
Before
Vitamin C Serum
After
Sérum Vitamine C Juno Skin 30 ml, éclat du teint et teint unifié, texture légère pour peaux ternes, usage quotidien
How we set it up
AI config (enhance title, translated into French, sources: name, description, size; the result runs 100 to 150 characters with brand, product and size first), reviewed and accepted, feeds structured_title through replace from AI config under the condition is accepted in AI config (left empty otherwise), while title keeps the English template for products without an accepted AI title. digital_source_type gets add static value trained_algorithmic_media under the same condition.
Copy this plan
From template to titles in the feed
Five steps. The first three are the whole job for a template; the last two add AI titles where the template reads flat.
01
Audit the attributes you have
Connect the store and open the feed hygiene profile. The completeness check shows which attributes (material, capacity, color) are filled for enough products to belong in the template; an attribute filled for 30% of products should be optional in the rule, not required.
What we set up: We connect the store and go through the feed hygiene completeness check with you.02
Clean the inputs
A column takes one rule, so a title built in step 3 cannot also be cleaned by regex. Fix promotional words, internal codes and unit spellings in the store or a merged source; where the store title goes out on its own, strip them with remove from regexp as its one rule.
What we set up: Where the store title ships on its own, we map it with remove from regexp: \s*(SALE|NEW|Free shipping)\s*03
Build the template as a rule
Pick the category row above. Use combine for a fixed order and the advanced DSL when an attribute is conditional. Check the output on a few products in the product explorer before publishing.
What we set up: We write title as a combine with the delimiter ", ", or as an advanced rule when an attribute is conditional.04
Add an AI config for the products that need it
Create a title config with the attributes to use and, if needed, the feed language to translate into. Run it, review and accept the generations, then map it to structured_title under an is accepted in AI config condition and keep the template in title.
What we set up: We set up an enhance-title AI config and map structured_title with replace from AI config.05
Guard the length and publish
Filters read the source title, not the one the rule builds, so check the built titles for length over 150 with feed hygiene, and exclude products whose source title is shorter than 20 characters so placeholders never ship. Publish; the feed rebuilds on the shop's schedule.
What we set up: We check the length distribution in feed hygiene, add an exclude filter where the source title is shorter than 20, and publish.
Customization tips
Make it yours
Put the brand first unless it is unknown
Brand-first matches how most shoppers type queries and how Google's examples are written. For white-label or unbranded catalogs, leading with the product type reads better and avoids a title that starts with a store name Google treats as promotional. Decide per catalog, not per product.
Keep the variant attribute in its own column as well
Google asks for color and size in the title and in the color and size attributes. The rule that appends them to the title should read the same source as the attribute columns, so a renamed option value changes both places at once.
Spend characters on search terms, not adjectives
Waterproof, 45 L and 128 GB are typed into search boxes; premium and beautiful are not. If the template has room after the variant, add one specification from the attributes rather than a marketing word.
Template for Google, rewrite for the store
A 70-character attribute string is a good feed title and a poor product-page headline. Keep the store's own title for the website and build the feed title in the mapping, so merchandising and feed optimization do not fight over one field.

FAQ
Questions about google shopping product title template
What is the best product title format for Google Shopping?
Brand, then product type, then the attribute shoppers search by, then the variant (color, size, capacity), within about 70 characters for the visible part and never more than 150. Google's own examples follow this order, for instance "Sleeveless Polka Dot Skater Dress, Small, Black". Leave out price, promotions, shipping and your company name.
How long should a Google Shopping product title be?
Google accepts 1 to 150 characters and truncates longer titles. Shoppers usually see around 70 characters in ads, so put the identifying words first and use the rest for specifications. Short titles are the more common problem: on feeds Textfinity has profiled, the average title uses about 20 characters.
Can I use AI to write Google Shopping titles?
Yes, with one rule: titles produced with generative AI must be submitted in the structured_title attribute with digital_source_type set to trained_algorithmic_media rather than in title. A feed tool that writes AI titles per product can map them to that attribute and keep a template title as the fallback.
Is a product title template the same for every ecommerce channel?
The attributes are the same; the length and style are not. Google allows 150 and shows about 70; Meta allows 200 and recommends 65; TikTok Shop listings need 25 to 200 characters with each word capitalized; Pinterest accepts up to 500. Run one attribute mapping and a different title rule per channel feed.
