Product description template for ecommerce

Most product description templates are a page of fill-in-the-blank cues for writing one product by hand. This one is built for catalogs: five formulas that each read as a paragraph, one per kind of product, with the attributes they pull from, the channel limits they respect, and the way to apply a formula to two thousand products at once, by rule or by AI config, without writing two thousand descriptions.

We connect your store, build the feed and keep it in sync. Updated 2026-10-27.

At a glance

  • A description template is a formula over attributes: what it is, who it is for, what it is made of, what it does, what is in the box. Fill the formula from columns, not from memory.
  • Google: 1 to 5,000 characters, plain text, no promo text, prices, links, company name or all caps; the first 160 to 500 characters are what shoppers see before clicking.
  • Shopify's Description column accepts HTML for the storefront; the feed description must be stripped of it. Shopify's SEO description is a separate field, up to 320 characters.
  • For a catalog, apply the formula with a combine rule (deterministic) or an AI config that writes 500 to 1,000 characters from the same attributes (varied wording, reviewed before use).

Five product description templates, one per product type

Each template is a sentence order, not a word count. Square brackets are attributes from your catalog; a blank attribute leaves a gap in the sentence rather than dropping the clause, so fill thin columns from a merged sheet or wrap the clause in an advanced if. Pick the template by what the shopper needs to know first.

TemplateFormulaFits
Spec-first[brand] [product_type] [model]. [key_spec_1], [key_spec_2] and [key_spec_3]. Compatible with [compatibility]. Includes [in_the_box].Electronics, tools, auto parts
Material-first[product_type] in [material] with [finish]. [dimensions]; [weight]. [care]. Made in [origin].Furniture, home decor, kitchen
Fit-first[gender] [product_type] by [brand] in [color]. [fit] fit, [fabric]. [feature_1] and [feature_2]. Available in sizes [size_range].Apparel, footwear, accessories
Use-first[product_type] for [skin_type or use_case]. [key_ingredient_1] and [key_ingredient_2] [benefit]. [size_or_volume]. [free_from].Beauty, supplements, cleaning
Occasion-first[product_type] for [occasion]. [flavor_or_scent] [sensory_note]. [quantity] per pack; [shelf_life]. [allergens or dietary].Food, drink, gifts, candles

Attribute names are placeholders; map them to your own columns. Each formula stays under 400 characters when filled, so the whole description fits in the part Google shows first.

The channel rules the template respects

Google's description attribute takes 1 to 5,000 characters of plain text and truncates anything longer. It must not contain promotional text (prices, sale dates, shipping promises), links, your company name, comparisons with other products, category paths or all-caps emphasis, and Google recommends putting the most important details in the first 160 to 500 characters because shoppers must click to read the rest. Every one of the five formulas is written to put the identifying facts in the first sentence for that reason.

Shopify stores two description fields. The product Description column holds HTML for the storefront; a feed built from it needs the tags removed. The SEO description is a separate 320-character field for search snippets, not a product description. If you are searching for a product description template for Shopify, write the storefront version from the formula, then let the feed strip the HTML, because the attribute content is the same.

Before and after: the same formula on three catalogs

The three examples below apply a template to products from different verticals. What changes is not the wording of the page but the attributes available: a furniture catalog has dimensions and material; a supplement catalog has ingredients and dose. The 'how' line under each names the Textfinity rule that produced it.

Applying one template to a whole catalog

There are two ways to run a formula over every product. A combine rule concatenates attributes with a delimiter and produces identical sentence structures; it is deterministic, needs no review, and reads mechanically. An AI config takes the same attributes and writes a varied description of 500 to 1,000 characters per product (the length is fixed by Textfinity, there is no prompt to write); it runs in batches over the catalog and regenerates when products change. Both reach the feed through a mapping rule: combine directly, AI through the 'replace from AI config' transform with the store description as a fallback for products without an accepted generation.

A reasonable split: the combine formula for channels that need short, strictly factual text, and an AI description for channels that reward a full paragraph, with the formula's attributes chosen as its source fields so it draws on the same facts. Translation is the same mechanism with a target language, which is how one template produces German and Swedish descriptions for Shopify Markets.

Material-first template as an advanced DSL expression

[product_type] + " in " + [material] + " with " + [finish] + ". "
+ [width_cm] + " x " + [depth_cm] + " x " + [height_cm] + " cm; " + [weight_kg] + " kg. "
+ [care] + ". Made in " + [origin] + "."

Examples

Worked examples, by situation

Three catalogs, three templates, each as a before/after row with the rule behind it.

Furniture · Google Shopping · 600 SKUs · WooCommerce · material-first

From a one-line store description to a spec paragraph

Before

Oak desk. Great for home offices!

After

Writing desk in solid oak with an oiled finish. 120 x 60 x 75 cm; 28 kg. Wipe with a damp cloth. Made in Sweden.

How we set it up

We map description with an advanced DSL rule combining [product_type], [material], [finish], the three dimension columns, [weight_kg], [care] and [origin] as in the snippet above. Promo text and the exclamation mark never enter the feed.

Beauty · Meta catalog + Google · 350 SKUs · Shopify · use-first · DE translation

Ingredient-led description, then the same in German

Before

<p>Our <b>best-selling</b> moisturiser! Free shipping over €40.</p>

After

Face cream for dry and sensitive skin. Hyaluronic acid and squalane hydrate for 24 hours without fragrance. 50 ml. Free from parabens and mineral oil.

Gesichtscreme für trockene und empfindliche Haut. Hyaluronsäure und Squalan spenden 24 Stunden Feuchtigkeit, ohne Duftstoffe. 50 ml. Ohne Parabene und Mineralöl.

How we set it up

We set up an enhance-description AI config reading skin_type, ingredients, volume and free_from (the promo line is not a source field, so no price or shipping claims reach the text) and a second config that translates into German; both are reviewed and accepted. description then has the condition is accepted in AI config: replace from AI config, otherwise remove from regexp <[^>]+> on the Shopify description.

Food · Google Shopping · 120 SKUs · Google Sheet source · occasion-first

A small catalog filled by combine, no AI

Before

Espresso beans 250g

After

Espresso beans for morning coffee and after-dinner shots. Dark roast with notes of cocoa and dried fruit. 250 g per bag; best within 12 months. Contains no allergens.

How we set it up

We map description as a combine of [product_type], [occasion_sentence], [flavor_sentence], [pack_sentence] and [allergen_sentence] with delimiter ' '. The sheet holds the sentences as columns, so a 120-product catalog needs no AI at all.

Copy this plan

Roll one template out across the catalog

An hour for the combine route, an afternoon for the AI route including review.

  1. 01

Pick the template per product type

Most catalogs need two: spec-first or material-first for hard goods, fit-first or use-first for soft goods. Assign by product_type or category.

  2. 02

Check which attributes you actually have

Open the feed hygiene profile and read completeness for material, dimensions, ingredients, fit. A formula over a 40%-filled column produces 60% broken sentences; use a merged sheet to fill the gap or drop the clause.

What we set up: We read the completeness per column in feed hygiene with you before choosing the clauses.
  3. 03

Write the formula as a combine or advanced rule

Brand, product type and the attributes that identify the product, in the template's order. This part should never vary and never hallucinate.

What we set up: We write description as a combine with delimiter ' ', or as an advanced rule when a clause is conditional.
  4. 04

Add an AI config for the rest

Pick the formula's attributes as source fields and, if needed, a target language. Textfinity fixes the length at 500 to 1,000 characters. Run it on the catalog in batches, then review and accept the generations.

What we set up: We set up an enhance-description AI config and give description the condition is accepted in AI config: replace from AI config, otherwise the step 3 formula.
  5. 05

    Keep the other branch clean

Products without an accepted generation get the other branch of the rule, which must still obey Google's rules. If that branch is the store description rather than the formula, strip HTML and promo text there.

What we set up: On the otherwise branch we apply remove from regexp (?i)<[^>]+>|free shipping[^.]*\.
  6. 06

    Review a sample and publish

Twenty products across types in the product explorer, then rebuild. The AI config regenerates when source attributes change; accept the new versions so the descriptions stay current.

What we set up: We review the sample with you in the product explorer, then add the feed URL to your Merchant Center as a scheduled fetch.

Customization tips

Make it yours

Decide what the first 160 characters must say

That is what shoppers see before clicking on Google and the part most channels index. Put brand, type and the deciding attribute there; put care instructions and origin last.

Keep the storefront and the feed descriptions from one source

Writing one HTML description for the store and a separate plain one for the feed doubles the work and drifts within a quarter. Write the storefront version from the template, then strip tags and promo sentences in the feed rule.

Use combine where facts matter and AI where reading matters

Dimensions, ingredients and compatibility lists should come from columns verbatim. Sentence variety and translation are what the AI config is for. A description column takes one rule, so mix them per channel or per product (with an is accepted in AI config condition), not within one description.

Aim well below the channel's maximum

Google permits 5,000 characters; a description of a few hundred characters reads better and is shown almost entirely. Textfinity's AI descriptions run 500 to 1,000 characters, which fits Google, Meta and Pinterest; for a channel with a tighter cap, use the combine formula there instead.

FAQ

Questions about product description template ecommerce

What is a product description template for ecommerce?

A fixed sentence order filled from product attributes: what the product is, who it is for, what it is made of or contains, what it does, and what is included. Used across a catalog it keeps every description factual and consistent, and it can be applied by a rule or an AI config rather than written per product.

How long should an ecommerce product description be?

Google accepts 1 to 5,000 characters and shows roughly the first 160 to 500 before a click, so 400 to 800 characters with the identifying facts in the first sentence works for most catalogs. Shopify's separate SEO description field is limited to 320 characters.

What should not go in a product description for Google Shopping?

Prices, sale dates, shipping claims, links, your company name, comparisons with other products, category paths, all-caps emphasis and HTML. Google's description attribute is plain text about the product itself; promotional text belongs elsewhere.

Is there a product description template for Shopify?

Any of the five formulas works. Write it into Shopify's Description column (HTML is allowed for the storefront) and keep the SEO description as a separate 320-character summary. When the catalog is fed to Google or Meta, the feed rule strips the HTML so the same text serves both.

Can AI write product descriptions for a whole catalog?

Yes. In Textfinity an AI config takes chosen source attributes and an optional target language, generates a 500 to 1,000 character description per product in batches for review and acceptance, and regenerates when products change. Where a deterministic text is enough, a rule-based combine does the job without AI.
